And burn it would.Ī previous version of this story included an incorrect estimate for the amount of damage the fire caused in today’s dollars. Part of a citywide commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire. On Sunday evening October 8th 1871 a fire broke out in a barn owned by the O’Leary family on DeKoven Street that spread a little over three miles across Chicago, ultimately destroying 17,450 buildings, killing around 300. Great Chicago Fire is part of WikiProject Wildfire, which collaborates on wildfire-related articles on Wikipedia. ![]() In early October, the paper declared, “We will continue to print these stories on conflagrations until the common council acts.” My photo of 1931 diorama depicting the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 at the Chicago History Museum. ![]() The Tribune, operating from its new four-story “fireproof” building, had published all through the hot and dry summer and fall, almost daily stories about fires throughout the country. He would have known that the men of the fire department were exhausted. He could have observed buildings baked dry by the sun. But he was aware that it had not rained in Chicago in a long time and that many of the city’s wells were empty. He offered a grim prophecy, saying, “This is the last public address that will be delivered within these walls! A terrible calamity is impending over the city of Chicago! More I cannot say, more I dare not utter.” It may be history to you, but to me it’s a place I’ve paid for.” Fortunately six years later the home was designated a landmark by the Chicago Landmarks Commission. It was on that same night that eccentric businessman George Francis Train spoke to a crowd in Farwell Hall at Clark and Madison streets. Read their stories, letters, memoirs and testimonies from the 1871 disaster that destroyed 17,450 buildings and killed hundreds of people. Liebrich remarked that she “couldn’t care less about its history. Learn how the city of Chicago faced the most famous fire in its history, from the perspective of people who lived through it. The Chicago Tribune reported a few days later that “a small white cottage…remains unscathed in the midst of the dreary waste surrounding it.” Exactly a hundred years later, the then owner, a woman named Mrs. ![]() It worked! Everything around his little cottage burned to ground. He also cleared all the dry leaves on the property, then he tore up the wooden sidewalk and picket fence so the fire wouldn’t spread. Over two days, it jumped the South Branch of the Chicago River, destroyed the downtown. 8, 1871, on what we would now call the city's Near West Side. Both employed as policemen, Bellinger and his brother-in-law wetted down the home and its roof with water and cider taken from the cellar, covering the building with soaked rugs and blankets. The Great Chicago Fire began on Sunday, Oct. Boyington, the architect of the city’s water tower (the only public building left untouched in the burned zone ), it cost $500 to construct the home (or $16,500 with inflation). The most famous residence to survive the fire is the Richard Bellinger Cottage, a late 1860s Italianate that stands at 2121 N. My photo of Bellinger’s 1860s clapboard and shingled raised cottage. In The Great Chicago Fire, WTTW tells the dramatic story of a defining and prescient moment in Chicago history the Great Fire of 1871 when Chicagoans fac.

1/1/2024 0 Comments Nivada chronomaster vintage![]() Until then I'll keep my eye open for a hidden gem. i will have to wait for the bubble to burst. I want a Nivada Grenchen Aviator but maybe. People if a vintage watch has a chronograph dial and has a "crappy" manual movement does not make it worth $1000, let alone $1500. Most of what i see is a push to over price and over value, common pieces. The forums say the new emerging watch owners will be normal average people not the ultra wealthy who are looking for "one off" pieces. I hear watch sites speak of if the watch industry is to survives its going to have to reach a new demographic. These blogs ruin the opportunity for you and I the average guy to own such pieces. This watch has had the misfortune to be mentioned by Hodinkee and Worn and Wound. I know that its not a reasonable purchase for me yet i still love this watch. These mass produced vintaged pieces are not rare and come up every single day on the internet. Can i justify $2,000 for a Nivada Grenchen, no I can't, and will not. I really like this watch and would love to add it to my very small collection but what i struggle with is the crazy bubble we find ourselves in today. I'm aware that many NG are running various movements Valjoux 72, Valjoux 92 or Valjoux 23 but most are not sold with this in mind. This could put you at over $4000 to $5,000. Prices says nothing of it's condition, i seen non serviced watches that need total restoration. Let's fast forward a year later this watch price range $1500 to $3000 and up. I could not bite the bullet, besides could purchase it anytime. So because my love affair with this watch had not fully blossomed. About a little over a year ago this watch could be had for $800 to $1000. I know I'm not alone and there are many others who feel the same emotions about this piece. What I have for this watch borders on love, but not quite There is something cool about this watch and it's vintage appeal. I love those vintage arrow hands and the classic bezel. So let me say i really like the Nivada Grenchen Chronograph Aviator chronomaster sea diver. 1/1/2024 0 Comments Rhesus b negative blood type![]() ![]() The short answer to this question is: it’s rare everywhere! This is partially because of how Rh factor is passed down from parents to their children. Our distant hominid, human-like ancestors already had positive and negative blood types! 3 Rh- blood type is probably older than modern humans! (Image via Shutterstock) Why is Rh- so rare in the United States? This genetic variation is older than humans are as a species. That’s the most common cause of Rh- blood type. It turns out that some people don’t have this gene at all. The biggest difference though is in the RHD gene. And there can be a lot of differences in these genes that affect your blood in minor ways! 3 There are a lot more than just two versions, which is one reason why Rh blood type tests are sometimes inaccurate. Together, these genes provide the instructions to make Rh factor. Humans have two different Rh genes: RHD and RHCE. And if you go even further back in evolutionary history, you can even find similar genes in bacteria! 2 Other primates have similar Rh molecules to us. This actually refers to how scientists first discovered Rh: in Rhesus macaque monkeys. Like I mentioned earlier, Rh factor is short for Rhesus factor. The short answer is that Rh factor is very, very old. Different types of antigens on blood cells (Image via Shutterstock) Where does Rh- originate from? Similarly, Rh genes determine whether you have positive or negative type. For example, the ABO gene determines whether you have type A, B, AB, or O. ![]() There are a few different genes that affect blood type. Which antigens your body makes are determined by your DNA. If you don’t have it, you have negative type blood. If you have that marker, you have positive type blood. The + or – part of blood type refers to the Rhesus factor, or Rh factor for short. You might have “A” type markers, “B” type, both, or neither! But those aren’t the only antigen types. Our blood cells are covered in little markers or flags, called antigens. These are terms describing different blood types a person can have. You may have already heard terms like A+ blood, B- blood, or O blood. Only 15% or so of Americans have this blood type! 1īefore we dive all the way in, we need to talk a bit about blood type. These are both great questions! You’re right that negative type is fairly rare. 1/1/2024 0 Comments Gorilla mode discountOn the best scaled price per serving would be ->ģx gorrila mode + 20% BF discount + starter pack = 130 servings. Some cameras opt for hard-wired internal storage, like the Miofive 4K. There are often bundles available with the card. Some come with larger cards, and some budget models come without. Incident recording triggered by impact (G) sensors, or when in parking mode (see below), by motion detection. The camera should have a setting that allows you to specify how long the camera runs off 12-volt before shutting down. This requires a battery or large super-capacitor (see below in “Power connections”). Self-powered recording when power fails, so that you can be sure to capture all of an incident. It’s handy for those managing fleets of vehicles, too, as incident videos are safely stashed online. Uploading to the cloud in real time is a nice hedge against damage and theft-assuming the thief isn’t smart enough to kill the dash cam immediately. Cloud storage is available with a few dash cams. Most dash cams will overwrite older recordings when they run out of space. Video is saved (protected from overwriting) automatically when an incident is detected. Video is recorded, then immediately overwritten at a specified interval unless saved. Continuous loop recording to minimize storage requirements.Don’t avoid 4K UHD-which is a feature in our best overall picks-but read the reviews first so you know whether the cost is justified. For most purposes,1080p is the more frugal everyday choice. In our tests, the gain in detail from 4K video (2160p) can vary, but the storage investment is consistently heavy: four times the storage of 1080p, or around 1GB for every three minutes of video. Do you need 4K UHD? It’s easy to fall victim to the specsmanship of a higher-res image.WDR (wide dynamic range) is much like above, except it usually refers to only color and not contrast. It also generally indicates richer color. HDR (high dynamic range) isn’t necessary, but it does make for more detailed video because of better contrast.Infrared lighting is important if you want to assure good captures of nocturnal events inside the cabin of your vehicle.Day and night video recording (night quality is a big variant).Note that the wider the field of view, the more fish-eye distortion there is, and more processing is involved to compensate. Some cameras offer 160- to 180-degree lenses. A decently wide field of view: You’ll see cameras with as little as 90-degrees field of view, but you’ll catch more of what’s around you if you go for 120 to 140 degrees.Interior cameras are generally situated on the dash cam, but rear cameras are separate and require additional cabling. Dual-channel support: This is what you’ll need if you want to run both front and rear, or interior (cabin-view) cameras. We’ll step you through what to think about when you’re shopping for a dash cam, from video capabilities, recording options, power connections, and more. It might be a bit off the beaten path compared to the standard dash cam, but the unique design and effective capture quality make the 70mai X200 much more than just a novelty.ħ0mai X200 dash cam review What to look for in a dash cam It’s also easy to set up, has an app to control the camera, and comes with integrated GPS. It’s not just about the aesthetics with this dash cam either the camera actually captures colorful and detailed video and images, day or night. Looking like something out of Wall-E, the pill-shaped camera uses a clever covering to hide a motorized 1080p, 60fps camera, that can rotate 360 degrees. Fortunately, the 70mai X200 Dash Cam Omni has come around to fix that. Most dash cams have the same basic uninspired design, with very little innovation in the market. |
